Marco Rubio warned of escalating US sanctions against Russia during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, following President Trump’s inconclusive phone call with Vladimir Putin. The two-hour discussion failed to yield progress toward ending the conflict that began with Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Democratic lawmakers criticized the missed opportunity to pressure the Kremlin, noting the administration’s failure to explicitly threaten expanded sanctions. A Republican-led proposal seeks to impose wide-ranging financial restrictions aimed at crippling Russia’s war funding mechanisms.
